The transcript of President Obama's Inauguration speech (link) speaks to the essence of the freedom of choice inspired by hope.
The apithology paralells are clear. President Obama said: "On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord." The themes of openness rather than contraction - and convergence over fragmentation, without loss of individual repesentation, is powerful in its approach.
I wonder, though, if the speech was heard. Is hope something out there that we aspire to being carried towards, or is hope something in here within us that enables us to undertake the journey that is its own reward?
The answer that was given is clear:
"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world; duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of citizenship."
Hope is to what one aspires, not the object of one's desires. |
